The 5 × 5 is the classic mini crossword and the size of our daily puzzle, which changes at midnight Eastern Time. This page shows the current daily 5 × 5, the same grid as today's puzzle.
Every 5 × 5 has ten answers, five Across and five Down, three to five letters long, with two, four or six black squares in the corners. The clues are pitched at our easiest difficulty setting, so it's the size to start with if you're new to crosswords.
Our 5 × 5s are built by our own puzzle generator: it fills the grid from a crossword word list, our software writes and checks the clues, and we fix any clue a player reports through the feedback button. How our puzzles are made has the details.
