About these answers
Mini #350's ten answers fill 23 white squares, and every one of them is crossed, so each letter belongs to one Across and one Down answer. The longest answers are EUROS (5-Across), TREAT (7-Across), SANTA (8-Across), RURAL (2-Down), ARENA (3-Down) and GOATS (4-Down), at five letters; the shortest are BRAG (1-Across), LAST (9-Across), BETS (1-Down) and STAT (6-Down).
The grid uses eleven different letters. The most common is A, in five squares, and 9 of the 23 squares hold a vowel (A, E, I, O or U). There’s no J, Q, X or Z in it.
The trickier clues, explained
- 4-Down, “Farm animals that butt heads?”: the answer is GOATS. A question mark is the crossword signal for wordplay.
- 6-Down, “Baseball figure like batting average, briefly”: the short form is STAT.
