The longest answers are ONTOP (5-Across), STOLE (7-Across), SIREN (8-Across), UNTIL (2-Down), STORE (3-Down) and HOLES (4-Down), at five letters; the shortest are BUSH (1-Across), LESS (9-Across), BOSS (1-Down) and PENS (6-Down).
The grid uses twelve different letters. The most common is S, in five squares, and 8 of the 23 squares hold a vowel (A, E, I, O or U). There’s no J, Q, X or Z in it.
The trickier clues, explained
